Following the footsteps of your ancestor/the old people who have gone before you.

Farewell, farewell, farewell

We are heartbroken with the sudden passing of Mason Tamati Ngawhika, aged 49 on the 7th of November 2022.

Beloved husband of Gina Loheni, much-loved father to Te Rino, Tana and Aniva, cherished son of Bunny and Robyn Ngawhika, adored brother to Kim Ngawhika and ‘Uncle Mas’ to many nieces and nephews, including Tea, Evy and Ani who loved and respected him.

Mason lived in Auckland but grew up in Nelson, attending Auckland Point School, Nelson Intermediate, Nelson College and Otago University, gaining degrees in Māori and Human Nutrition.

Our whānau was deeply touched by the large number of friends and whānau who travelled to farewell him and to honour his mahi in the Māori, Pacifica, and sporting communities.

Mason was proudly of Ngāi Tahu and Te Arawa descent and was laid to rest at Oreiwhata our ancestral urupa overlooking Pukehina Beach, in the Bay of Plenty.
