Whakatū Marae has a restriction for self-catering hireage. We reserve this request for Iwi functions and those who have a personal affiliation with Whakatū Marae. All self-catered hui are pre-approved through the Kaitiaki
Charges and fees for groups/persons with approval to self-cater:
Iwi booking – functions & personal affiliate groups/persons
Full-day booking : when a period extends past the afore-mentioned time periods e.g. 08.00am – 13.00pm
WM reserves the right to refuse bookings that are deemed to be inappropriate or abusing the time periods given.
Where there are breakages, loss of assets, misplaced equipment or wear & tear outside of general use, Whakatū Marae will charge the group/persons for full replacement of the item/s. where applicable expectation of replacement or payment will be given as a secondary service invoice. WM reserves the right to refuse future bookings from this group/persons until this is cleared.
Hangi Pit: Whakatū Marae hangi pit is available for groups/persons to hire separately to a formal booking. Where a group has hired facilities such as Mauriora & Kaakati, there is no extra charge for this. The WM Administrator/Kaitiaki will take hangi pit bookings during facilities hireage unless the hiree has indicated that they will be using it.
Cleaning: With all self-catered bookings, it is expected that the group/persons will ensure all areas and facilities used be cleaned immaculately. In light of the self-catering option, cleaning is party to the approval and access for this booking option. Please note that where the cleaning is less than acceptable, Whakatū Marae will charge the hiree for a cleaner to come in.
The only exception given with self-catering is in time of Hui Mate/Tangihanga where the Kaitiaki will meet with a whanau representative to run through the facilities to ensure that all is in place for the whanau pani. This process is different – please refer to Hui Mate/Tangihanga for process & protocol for Whakatū Marae.
All users of the Marae facilities must adhere to the Health & Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA).
Setting up of Facilities
Layout of Kaakati l Sleeping & big room
Pae Tapu The Pae Tapu (where oratory & waiata kinaki are delivered) is more usually set up inside Kaakati near the front of the whare. There is accommodated seating on both sides for Manuhiri & Tangata Whenua. Where there are unexpected large visitor numbers, Manuhiri will be guided down the right-side of the whare to be seated in line with the Pae Tapu being maintained during this ritual.
It is the tikanga of Whakatū Marae that manaakitanga is extended at all times. This is even in times of unsurety we must act to the comforts of our Manuhiri whilst maintaining cultural integrity. At the conclusion of Powhiri groups/persons staying overnight, chairs can be moved to the side and stacked tidily to allow room for mattresses or working spaces.
Mattresses A number of mattresses will be laid out with linen and pillows. Where more bedding and linen is required they can be accessed from the laundry room, next to the women’s toilets on the back left-side of Kaakati. At the conclusion of a booking, please have used linen put together in one sheet and left at the top end of the whare. Mattresses can also be stacked to the side where they will be placed out after cleaning. Any extra mattresses to be returned to the mattress room please.
Please do not allow members of your group to sleep in the mattress/laundry room. This can become a hazard and safety issue and therefore we restrict this.
Layout of Mauriora l Dining room
Tables There are fifteen 6-seater tables that are set up in 5 rows of 3 tables lined up vertically. We use a general layout for the tables and work with them accordingly. At the beginning of each booking a person/groups should find the tables set out in this manner. If the tables are moved in any way, we ask that they are returned as you found them for departing. Table cloths also accompany the tables that are erected for use. Please note we do leave excess tables out for working spaces and presentations. Again if these are moved, please do return to their original place.
We do have a locked storage room with extra tables and kitchen resources are stored. In situations where more tables and cloths are required, please be sure to indicate clear numbers on your booking form otherwise last minute notice may result in inaccessibility. Chairs Chairs are set out with tables. We also leave excess chairs to the side of Mauriora to accommodate working spaces or meetings. At the end of a booking, where any chairs have been moved to accommodate your booking, please return to their original places.
Whakatū Marae is located between Founders Park and Miyazu Japanese Gardens. Office and services are located in the long building next to Founders Park, at the far end of the long veranda.
